Awesome Chord: D9 [X 5 4 5 5 5]

In one of my earlier Awesome Chord lessons, I covered C9. If you've got that one down, then D9 will look very familiar! It uses the same chord shape, but you shift it up two frets, which is also known as a whole step up.

If you're looking for a funky type of sound, then make way for our friend D9!

How to Play D9 on the Guitar:
  • Place Your Left Index Finger on the 4th String, 4th Fret
  • Place Your Left Middle Finger on the 5th String, 5th Fret
  • Place Your Left Ring Finger over the 3rd, 2nd and 1st Strings, 5th Fret
  • String 6 is not used in this D9 chord

Have fun with this chord and try moving this chord shape up and down the fretboard. With practice, who knows... you may become the next James Brown!

What do you think of D9? Does it give your guitar playing some attitude? Share your thoughts with us below and enjoy the funk!
